Malawi’s Gender and Child Development Minister Patricia Kaliati on Wednesday said that her government would embark on an exercise to remove all street children from the country’s major cities starting from February this year.
She told journalists in Lilongwe that the kids will be taken to designated places like state-run rehabilitation centres so that they can be reformed into productive citizens.
“These kids will be sent back to school, others will be taught vocational skills like carpentry, tailoring and mechanical engineering, among others,” he said.
She said the development would help the street children to be self-reliant in future.
Her government and its partners will jointly do the exercise to make sure that street kids lead normal lives like other kids, she added.–APA
